Synopsis
Harvey tells the whimsical and heartwarming story of Elwood P. Dowd, an amiable and eccentric man whose best friend is a six-foot-tall invisible rabbit named Harvey. Elwood insists that Harvey is a pooka—a mythical creature from Celtic folklore—but to everyone else, especially his long-suffering sister Veta and niece Myrtle Mae, Harvey is nothing but a figment of his imagination and a social embarrassment.
Determined to rid themselves of this humiliation and secure Myrtle Mae’s future, Veta attempts to have Elwood committed to a sanitarium. However, due to a mix-up, Veta ends up being committed instead. Chaos and comedy ensue as the doctors and nurses at the sanitarium try to sort out the confusion.
As the story unfolds, the audience begins to question who the real “crazy” people are. Elwood’s kindness, openness, and gentle philosophy—embodied by his relationship with Harvey—eventually charm those around him, blurring the line between sanity and imagination.
