The History of the Red Chairs

NTPA’s iconic and beloved red chairs have been providing audiences comfort for over four decades! Originally installed in a Lake Highlands High School Auditorium in the ’80s, these seats were later purchased by NTPA in 2013, then known as the Plano Children’s Theatre.

In PCT’s 15th & Custer location, actors performed on a cement stage with no microphones, and the seats were hard, wooden pews purchased from an area church a decade earlier. Thanks to the efforts of Board Member Bob Morgan with support from then Executive Director Sara Akers, and Board President Darrell Rodenbaugh, NTPA acquired almost 300 of these plush red seats for installation. The upgraded “Mainstage Theatre” offered raised seating for 160 audience members.

A year later, the remaining seats were installed in the location’s “Black Box Theatre” by Deb and Tom Dobozy and Rodenbaugh’s Champion Fire & Security team, replacing un-cushioned wooden benches. These same seats came together on the raised seating structure in the Rodenbaugh Theatre built and installed by the dedicated “Team of Steel” volunteers at the Willow Bend Center of the Arts (see plaques for full list of names) in 2017.
