Rent (School Edition)
April 28 – May 1 at Fairview Youth Theatre
Based loosely on Puccini’s La Boheme, Rent (School Edition) follows a year in the life of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York’s Lower East Side, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS. The physical and emotional complications of the disease pervade the lives of Roger, Mimi, Tom and Angel. Maureen deals with her chronic infidelity through performance art; her partner, Joanne, wonders if their relationship is worth the trouble. Benny has sold out his Bohemian ideals in exchange for a hefty income and is on the outs with his former friends. Mark, an aspiring filmmaker, feels like an outsider to life in general. How these young bohemians negotiate their dreams, loves and conflicts provides the narrative thread to this groundbreaking musical.
Community Connection
Although Rent was written and a Broadway hit 25 years ago – it is still very relevant today. It’s for everyone who feels alone and afraid even though they’re aware that millions of other people feel the exact same way. Rent is about young people, who despite being surrounded by anger, fear and the unknown, come together and create community. They show each other that family is created when you allow yourself to care for the people around you, even when you’re afraid to.
Rent teaches young adults to embrace the moment, to not take anyone for granted and to witness what happens when people come together and choose each other over differences, adversity and fear.
In addition to the stellar musical, featuring performing artists between the ages of 13-18, NTPA – Fairview has planned two exciting Community Connection events with a goal to create a narrative about Community and NTPA’s care and support of equity and inclusion that is part of our organization’s culture.

The Carter BloodCare bus will be outside Fairview Youth Theatre accepting blood donations on Sunday, May 1. Advance sign up is available through the link below to guarantee a donation time. Walk-up donors will also be accepted.
NTPA Community Art Gallery
April 28-May 1
Plan to spend a little extra time with us before or after the show as we bring together our community of artists with a Rent-inspired visual arts exhibition in the Fairview Youth Theatre main lobby. The exhibition will include art from across the NTPA family including visual art pieces from the cast of Rent, film work by a Broadcast Journalism high school student, and photography by Fernando Martinez, an NTPA parent.
