It is with proud reflection and gratitude for his time with us that we announce Tevin Cates was honored posthumously as the recipient of The Column Awards 2020 Chita Rivera Dance Award for his performance in North Texas Performing Arts’ Repertory Theatre’s production of “West Side Story”. Tevin Wayne Cates passed away suddenly on October 7, 2019 as a result of an undiagnosed heart condition which led to an aortic dissection. Tevin was a Director, a Choreographer and an instructor for NTPA and the NTPA Academy, and performed in over 150 theatre productions across the metroplex. He was recognized for his portrayal of the role of “Riff” in NTPA’s “West Side Story” last summer.
The Column also announced that Tevin will be the last male recipient of the Chita Rivera Dance Award, and an outstanding male dancer will be honored annually with the new “Tevin Cates Dance Award.”
The Annual Column Awards is the DFW-equivalent of the “Tony Awards” and recognizes outstanding work on and off the stage for professional and amateur theatre troupes and actors. NTPA has now been honored with 15 nominations and two Column Awards for its Repertory Theatre productions.
